    (Agence Ecofin) – Les conséquences du coronavirus seront surtout visibles sur l’approvisionnement en cacao dans les prochains mois, estime Edward George, consultant indépendant sur les marchés des matières premières agricoles.

    Jusqu’ici, l’offre de fèves n’a pas été vraiment affectée par le coronavirus. En effet, la campagne principale s’est notamment achevée en Côte d’Ivoire sur une bonne récolte et les négociants ne se pressent pas pour les achats en raison des stocks confortables. D’après l’expert, ce calme relatif pourrait être remis en cause durant la petite récolte en cours voire sur le début de la saison prochaine si les zones cacaoyères sont affectées par la maladie virale.

    « Si la progression de l’épidémie se poursuit et que le virus touche les zones cacaoyères au niveau de la prochaine saison, alors l’impact sera visible. Ce qui se passera dans les 3 à 4 prochains moins ce sera très important pour savoir si nous avons un problème avec le cacao », explique M. George.

    S’agissant du différentiel de revenu de subsistance (DRD), le responsable souligne que l’enjeu réside surtout dans l’utilisation des fonds déjà versés par les industriels depuis quelques mois sur la récolte 2020/2021.

    « La grande inconnue est la transparence avec la gestion des fonds du DRD. Tout ce qu’on sait, c’est que le Conseil du Café-Cacao (CCC) va garder les sous jusqu’au début de la prochaine saison et l’utiliser pour augmenter le prix payé aux producteurs », indique-t-il.

    Pour rappel, la Côte d’Ivoire devrait récolter en 2019/2020 plus de 2 millions de tonnes de cacao.
