Tedd George comments on telcos becoming banks, digital crowdfunding platforms across Africa and the use of data to build digital identities and credit histories in John Everington’s article in ‘The Banker’.
“Telcos have increasingly advanced offerings for their own digital wallet services. It’s going to get more and more difficult when it comes to digital banking to tell the difference between a telco and a bank.”
“Crowdsourcing is as African as okra, but now you can digitalise the process (e.g. M-Changa and Matontine). The formalisation, or rather digitalisation, of informal networks could prove a big challenge to traditional banks.”

High #commodity prices have been both a boon and a burden for African markets, with huge gains in #oil, #gas and #softs exports offset by the surging cost of imported #fuel and #fertiliser. And new #ESG regulation in the #EU, including a #carbon import #tax and a ban on imports linked to #deforestation and #humanrights abuse, has #Africa‘s commodity supply chains in its crosshairs.

#Russia is pushing for concessions on its #fertiliser exports but does not want to irk its African allies who are feeling the brunt of high international #food prices. Although #Wheat and #maize prices have fallen from historical peaks, easing import pressures, substitution with local crops like #cassava remains #Africa‘s best long-term solution.

International prices are at three-year highs and the 2022/2023 season is going well, with #Ghanarebounding from last season’s slump. 3 July 2023: Tedd George is interviewed by Esther Awoniyi on CNBC Africa Closing Bell #WestAfrica discussing the International Cocoa Organization (ICCO)‘s project to create an African Cocoa Exchange (AfCX) to challenge the exchanges in #London & #NewYork.
The #AfCX could improve price discovery for African #cocoa, give smallholder farmers access to #finance and empower them to process their cocoa beans, boosting local #valueaddition. It could also help promote #sustainable cocoa & products and align #certification standards in #WestAfrica‘s four largest producers. But the big buyers will need to be brought on board for it to work.
In the meantime, boosting cocoa production remains a huge challenge as #ElNino and #climatechange impact weather patterns, undercutting #Ghana‘s rebound this season after the slump in 2021/22.

Prices are at historical highs, over 5,000 GBP per tonne, and Ghana’s tree stock has been ravaged by swollen shoot disease, destroying over half a million hectares of cocoa plantations. With Côte d’Ivoire’s output also slumping this season, the rising effects of climate change and El Niño are becoming apparent. Hold onto your horses…

4 April 2024: Tedd George is interviewed by Esther Awoniyi on CNBC Africa discussing moves by Cotedivoire and Ghana to increase the fixed price for cocoa in the mid-crop which is just starting. Global prices continue to hover around USD10,000 per tonne as buyers scramble to find beans to meet their main crop contracts, but very little of this price gain is going to farmers. And with production on a downward trend in both countries as climate change bites, a quick rebound in 2024/25 looks unlikely…
